15mm Middle Earth: Rohan

This post has been a draft since October and it is now August the following year, so the going has been fairly slow on this project!
The background to the project is pretty straightforward - I was sat in Mathew's garden and he said he had always fancied doing a Middle Earth based project in 10mm, I said that I'd be interested in doing it, not in 10mm but 15mm, he siad Right On! We got a bit giddy about it, ordered a few bags of figures and now here we are!
We went back and forth a bit about rules and basing and eventually agreed on starting off with some limited and achievable goals with the aim of just getting some figures on the table and throwing some dice around.
Dragon Rampant seemed perfect for the job. It is very flexible, doesn't need many figures and doesn't have any basing requirements. Once we got into the project a bit we could graduate to a meatier set of rules if we wanted (GW's War of the Ring perhaps), but to start with we wanted a very achievable plan.
We settled for some pretty standard 15mm basing. 40mm x 30mm bases for cavalry, 40 x 20 for infantry and then characters, monsters and any miscellaneous figures going on whatever feels appropriate.
So then, here are some snaps of my first lot of Rohirrim so far:
This is the whole lot together. We've got 2 units of heavy cav, 1 unit of light cav (mounted archers if you like), 1 unit of foot spears, 1 unit of archers and a baggage train.
The heavy cav models are from Forged in Battle and I think they are excellent. They are from the Goths/Vandals range, with Gaul leaders, which is not ideal but they were the best option and fit in well enough.
The foot are from Donnington and they are good enough but I may well go for more Forged in Battle models when I add more units. Drilling out the hands on 15mm models to fit the spears is a faff that I could do without, but the overall effect of the units is (just about) worth it.
Above is the baggage train, escorted by the light cav. Most of the baggage is Donnington, aside from the mounted warrior at the front. Donnington's baggage and camp range is excellent and I will certainly be adding at least one more baggage unit to the army.
The light cav are from Lurkio and I like them depsite the terrible horses. They look like tired old nags more used to plodding up and down a peaceful track to the market than the elite stock of the horse lords.
Matthew is currently doing a similarly sized Isengard warband/army and he informs me that he is close to finishing so we will have our first game soon. I'll be expanding my army and then drawing up some scenario plans for an invasion of Rohan campaign. I've got another unit of heavy cav and another unit of light cav plus I'll aim to do a couple more foot units and another baggage train stand.
Additionally, I've also started doing my own orcs, with the first unit of warg riders complete and the rest on the way, so I'll have enough to put on my own games in the not to distant future.
Anyway, I'll leave a couple more snaps here and update again when more painting gets done, and certainly when the first battle happens!
